CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

“WHAT DO YOU THINK?” Shandra, a stylist at Salon BeBe stood behind Lacy, her eyes bright with anticipation.

Lacy stared at herself in the mirror and ran her fingers through blond hair. “I look like me again.” It was strange to see her natural color after seven months as a brunette. She’d gotten used to it but she’d never liked it. “The color is exactly right. You’re a miracle worker.” She stood and gave Shandra a hug. “Thank you.”

Shandra waved a hand. “I’m just glad you’re alright. Take care of yourself, honey.”

Lacy paid and left for her appointment with the detective working her case.

“Hello, Lacy. I’m Jesse Parks. Pleased to meet you.” A man who looked to be in his early thirties came around the front of his desk and shook her hand. He straightened his maroon tie and fiddled with the button on his dark gray suit coat. Smiled briefly. “Have a seat.” He pulled a file from his desk and sat down. How are things going?”

Lacy folded her hands in her lap and tried not to fidget. “I’m doing okay. Trying to put my life back together.” It had been ten days since Patrick had grabbed her at Trey’s house. Most of her injuries had healed and she’d become more relaxed knowing Patrick was no longer a threat.

“I’m glad to hear that.” Detective Parks withdrew a packet of papers in a binder clip from the file. “Now that you’re feeling better, I wanted to get you up to speed with the case.”

“Okay.”

“Mr. McClellan is looking at a long list of charges.” He detailed each one. “He hasn’t been formally charged because the law dictates that he must appear before a judge at the first opportunity, which is generally within twenty-four hours. So as soon as he’s well enough to leave the hospital, we’ll make the arrest and things will move out of pause mode. Then the DA’s office will take over the case.”

Lacy gaped at him. “Are you telling me Patrick hasn’t been arrested?”

He shifted slightly. “That’s correct. But it’s just a formality. He’s under guard at St. Mary’s. We’ll make the arrest as soon as he’s well enough to go to court.”

“I can’t believe this. Why wasn’t I told?” Lacy surged to her feet, the implications to her person more important to her than anything about the case.

“You weren’t notified?” He rifled through the file and pulled out a paper. “Myra Ward is your Victim Witness Specialist. Haven’t the two of you spoken?”

“I’ve never heard of her.”

Detective Parks got to his feet. “Wait here, please. I’ll be right back.”

Lacy’s mind tripped over the list of charges. Everything Patrick had done was now reduced to a tally of legal jargon over which he would get to play a game of chicken with the DA. She’d assumed he was in jail or a prison hospital ward. But Patrick was under the care of the very same doctors and nurses who had helped her. Technically, he was still free. She looked out the window and muttered a curse.
